The restored Marine Hut in Queen Elizabeth Park has recently been given further care, with exterior repainting generously undertaken by Mark Hunt and Fraser Richardson, two professional painters who volunteered their time and expertise.
The hut has been refreshed in Resene’s colour “Planter” — a shade carefully matched to the building’s original paint. During the earlier restoration project, members of the Menzshed discovered a surviving piece of original timber just inside the doorway on the right-hand side. The fragment still carried traces of the historic colour. By taking this sample to Resene for matching, the team ensured that today’s visitors see the hut as closely as possible to how it once appeared.
This attention to detail reflects the Trust’s broader commitment to authenticity across the site. The Marine Hut is more than a restored structure; it is part of the living story of the Marines in New Zealand. Even the paintwork now carries that story forward — quite literally written in the wood.
